Dr. Carter G. Woodson, African-American historian and co-founder of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (now Association for the Study of African American Life and History), created Negro History and Literature Week in 1920 (later re-named to Negro History Week in 1926 and Black History Week in the 1970's) and chose a week in February that included the birthdays of both Abraham Lincoln (February 12) and black abolitionist Frederick Douglass (February 14). In 1976 Black History Week was expand to include the entire month of February.
Take time this month to explore the remarkable contributions, struggles, and accomplishments of African American scientists, educators, activists, artists, writers, athletes...and celebrate Black History Month!
